Your Dream 7-Day North Island Road-Trip
Campervan or Motorhome – Auckland to New Plymouth – 543km
If you're craving some opportunities for laid-back exploration amongst stunning landscapes, consider this road trip along the west coast of the North Island. This route offers an abundance of captivating scenery and sandy beaches, along with the added bonuses of remarkable caves, a memorable 'forgotten' highway, and a national park featuring a volcano at its centre. You can choose to finish the trip in New Plymouth and explore the city or continue along the famously easy-on-the-eyes surf highway.
Day 1 – Auckland, The City of Sails
To sample the City of Sails, and before hitting the road consider wandering Queen Street and the highly recommended waterside Wynyard Quarter, set your sights on Auckland Art Gallery or Museum, Ponsonby’s bars, Britomart’s restaurants, or cruise over to the volcanic island of Rangitoto.
Day 2 – Auckland to Raglan – 159km
Journey south on SH1, then head west via SH23 to reach Raglan, a town that exudes a perpetual "endless summer" ambiance. Raglan is renowned for its surf beaches, with Manu Bay boasting possibly the world's longest left-hand break. Nearby Ngarunui offers a delightful setting to spend your day, enjoying the gentle waves. In the evening, experience the breathtaking sunset from Kopua Beach.
Day 3 – Raglan to Waitomo Caves – from 94km to 105km

The best route to Waitomo Caves is via Kawhia Road, although it's important to note that a 22km stretch of the road is unsealed. Along the way, make sure to stop at Waireinga/Bridal Veil Falls and take some time to explore Kawhia, a charming harborside town with a rich Maori history. Once you reach Te Anga, take the Harbour Road to Waitomo, making sure to stop at Marokopa Falls and Mangapohue Natural Bridge, two incredible sights that will only add to your excitement for visiting Waitomo Caves. When you're ready to explore the underground wonderland, you can choose between a walking tour or a thrilling Legendary Black Water Rafting trip. Day 4 – Waitomo Caves to Whangamomona – 180km
To reach Taumarunui, head south via SH4 and then start on SH43, known as the Forgotten World Highway. This route is quiet and scenic but has many winding roads, so it's best to drive slowly and enjoy the ups and downs. Take breaks at different lookouts, waterfalls, and other points of interest, and don't miss the opportunity to have a meal at the Whangamomona Hotel, a historic pub located in the heart of the Forgotten World.
Day 5 – Whangamomona to New Plymouth – 102km
Make sure to take in the breathtaking views of Mt Taranaki as you travel the last part of SH43 and SH3 to New Plymouth. This city strikes a perfect balance between being a bustling industrial service centre and a lively small city, offering a warm welcome and a waterfront that's perfect for strolling. You'll get stunning views from Belt Road Seaside Holiday Park. While you're in town, don't miss the chance to visit the Puke Ariki museum and Pukekura Park, which is often hailed as the finest public gardens in New Zealand. Take a half-hour drive to the Taranaki/Egmont Visitor Centre, located high on Mt Taranaki's slopes. It's an excellent place to get acquainted with the national park before embarking on one of the many coastal or inland scenic hikes.
Day 6 – Surf Highway 45
Surf Highway 45, stretching 105km along the semi-circular coastline between New Plymouth and Hawera, offers a haven for surfers with consistent Tasman Sea swells. The majestic volcano serves as a constant companion along this route. In addition to being a paradise for surfers, the coastline provides ample opportunities for swimming, walking, and various other seaside activities. Just 11km south of New Plymouth, Oakura is a family-friendly hotspot boasting fun waves, summer lifeguard patrols, cafes and shops. Further south, 50 kilometres away, Opunake becomes the focal point for surfers during the summer months, offering a stunning location in close proximity to many and varied coastal walkways.
